Chris
Haigh has been playing eastern European music since meeting Russian
violinist Vladimir Asriev in the 1980’s, and playing regularly with him
at the Polish restaurant Zamoyski in Hampstead. After numerous tours in
eastern Europe, and working with many émigrés in London, Chris has
developed a deep understanding of Russian, Balkan, Gypsy and Klezmer
repertoire and fiddle styles. He
leads three bands; Tziganarama (a panorama of tzigane music); Klezmania ( a klezmer/jazz trio) and The
Kremlinaires (a wacky seven-piece “Soviet Swing” band). He also
regularly appears with bands such as Danny Shine’s Neshama, the Kedma
Band, Gilev Showband and Zvuk Bazaar. Chris
is an experienced workshop leader, regularly teaching at the Witney fiddle
weekends, The Brigg Fiddle Festival, Sidmouth Folk Festival and the London
Fiddle Convention. He has two books published (Fiddling around the World and Any
Fool can write Fiddle Tunes, and his most ambitious work The
Fiddle Handbook will appear in 2009. He also runs what is probably the
most comprehensive and frequently visited fiddle site on the web, www.fiddlingaround.co.uk. At the concert and workshop in Bristol, Chris will be demonstrating the fascinating asymmetric rhythms of the Balkans, the dark and haunting tones of klezmer fiddling, the wild and raucous music of the Carpathians, and the mysteries of gypsy improvisation. He is accompanied by Alan Dunn on accordion. |

Trevor has sent what is possibly the oldest known recording of Irish fiddle playing...... "An 1890's wax cylinder recording of Edward Cronin playing Banish Misfortune as was transcribed by O'Neill for his '1001'. I've cleaned up the mp3 to remove as much crackle and hiss as possible. This is possibly the oldest known recording of Irish fiddle music. The old wax cylinders weren't labeled, especially those recordings made by amateurs, as this one was (domestic recording wax cylinder players were readily available, if expensive), so someone, usually the artist, would say at the beginning what was about to be played. On this one you can hear Edward Cronin shouting into the horn. I can't quite make out all the words, but I think he may have been saying the Irish name of the tune ("dibir an mio-adh")." |

Bob Warrick
suggests a visit to this site. "My brother hangs out at this
place and helps to run the Mummers group, the only one in Ireland.
They had a bad fire last year but the place has been rebuilt and has just
reopened". |
